Part-time employment

I had many part-time jobs in my youth. One job, somewhat different, was working as a water boy for the citrus construction company... I carried water in a tank on my back to men working high up on warehouse buildings for the defense department’s Time and money was saved since the men did not have to come down for water. I had to lie about my age to get the job. I said I was 16 when I was only 14. In addition to being water boy l drove a pick-up into Ogden to get bags of cement for the job. Fortunately, nobody asked to see my driver’s license since I didn’t have one (you had to be 16 to get one)

My father was a carpenter. I worked for him on many occasions and performed many of the tasks required in his line of work. Dad usually had a few good men working for him Dick Gambling, an older Englishman was one of dads most dependable and loyal carpenters. One day, while working on two houses my father, who had a temper, got angry at me for working slower than he wanted. I was down the basement of a home throwing out boards and other debris through a hole where the stairs would eventually be. Dad jumped down in the basement and started throwing boards out at a rapid pace. Unfortunately, Dick Gambling was in the line of the boards and was hit on the head causing a brief blackout. My father discontinued my lesson in working faster and returned to his other tasks at hand.
